Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Lens (White) Get it now!

After looking through a lot of options this camera seems to offer the best combination of price performance.
Some first impressions are:
1. Good Hi Iso Performance with little noise. (Much better then Canon Xt then I used to own that only had 1600 max iso.)
2. Able to do HD Video (720p).
Video quality is ok, I compared it to my sony SR-12 HD camcoder its definitely not the same quality but it does have a unique movie type look to it, in low light its very grainy but in good light it does fine. Its a good back up to a camcoder, although you do have to get used to manual focusing to get good results. If you shoot a lot of movies get a bigger memory card, I have a 4 gig card and it only holds around 15 minutes of video in highest quality due to recording format.

3. First thing to do when you get the camera make sure you update the firmware to 1.01 that will solve the battery issue that many people been having. You can check which firmware you have by pressing the menu button and then turning the camera on.
So far a I took about 900 pictures and about 45 minutes of video on lithium batteries that came with the camera and only now the battery indicator shows orange.
4. As with any DSLR auto mode will not give you the best results, and every camera has its own "favorite" settings where it gets most consistent results. So far Im still figuring out what works best with this particular camera.
5. No camera is perfect but to me Good Hi Iso performance, Hd video option and price. Make it 5 stars.Get more detail about Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Lens (White).

Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-inch LCD and 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens Buy Now

I had the Rebel XT (350D) for three going four years, and yes it is a awesome camera!
when I was looking for an upgrade to my rebel XT the T1i look really great, but then came the 7D and all of the new AF features and video. I think that the rebel body is lean and small even more now having a XD body.
If your on a budget the rebel T1i is a great upgrade with more MP (al dough with 8MP is more than enough) good video Q, live view and better high ISO performance than the XXXD and if you like the rebel series bodies then you should go for it, now if you don't mind the video The 50D offers higher ISO and FPS than the rebel series and better IQ overall.
7D !!! :
I do recommend the upgrade to any one moving in that direction. The size is no issue when you get all that features, and it feels really good solid and hefty in your hands. The FPS & AF Are Fast. The high ISO performance is amazing comparing it to the XT, the low light focus and results are simply great. The AF points and versatile setup is so much better than the XT there is no comparing it.
The view finder and the LCD screen are just awesome... you cannot compare it to the Rebel 350D its on another league.
The battery life is longer, you can record RAW a JPG on at the same time or choose to do it with a press of a button. And the list of features goes on.
I Think that there is still much potential on the 7D via firmware cos it a awesome piece of hardware, no matter what they say.
18-270mm Tamron VC ( got it last year to upgrade the Rebel and now use with the 7D )
50D :
I think (money wise) that a Canon 50D is a good upgrade (IQ compared to the 7D) and don't care for the video or faster AF.
If you are looking for the most IQ available today, it's no brainer that the 5DMII is the choice (and don't mind the extra money) performs better in low light than the 7D. Now the 7D is faster on Focus and in FPS, so if youre a sports shooter or wildlife photographer the 7D will suit you more.
Hope it helps you decide
The AF is not 100% accurate all the time ( get a bit soft images that you can improve with PP ) but overall you get very good IQ ( if want excellent IQ get the 5DMKII )
Highly Recommended!Get more detail about Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-inch LCD and 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens.

Nikon D300s 12MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) Decide Now

this review is for the average person wanting to upgrade from the D40/D5000

With it's magnesium alloy inner body and rubber sealed buttons, this camera is an excellent piece of equipment for wildlife photography when paired wig the correct lens.

It is well constructed in the areas that it needs to be strong but quite honesly there are some places on the camera tha have been reduced in quality to cut costs such as the switches, buttons, or the flash release. Those components are higher quality on the D90 to be honest wh you.

Speaking of the D90, this camera has the exact same sensor as the D90. I lke to think of the D300s as a D90 with features and processing from the D3. This camera can shoot 720p motion JPEG based AVI video from a Live View mode activated by a dedicated button. This camera does have a 51 point auto focus system and color 1005 pixel light metering.

Now the ugly truth. If you put this camera next to a D90 in the same conditions, the D90 will out perform this camera in low light. If the D300s is used past ISO 3200 it produces the most horrid smuged and noisy pictures I have seen. The D90 with all of it's "auto help the novice processing" will help you out and rescue your photos the best it can. The D300s is a professional APS-C camera which means it won't help you out like that. You absolutly cannot take pictures in inadequate light without the proper equipment.

I would go with the D90 if you want a decent camera that will produce sharp pictures without all of the fuss. With the money you save you can get the AF-S 18-200 VRI. That comes in the D300s kit. If you must absolutly have the pro features such as wired remotes, flash box control, and so on go with the D300s. Get more detail about Nikon D300s 12MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera (Body Only).

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 12.1MP Micro Four-Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 Aspherical Lens Right now

I was hoping for the performance of a DSLR in the package of a (somewhat large) point & shoot. Unfortunately the image quality is not up to par of a DSLR (like my Nikon D80). Furthermore my Canon S90IS beats the Panasonic in terms of image quality, is smaller to boot, and has IS built-in. The movie quality is nowhere near a dedicated AVCHD camcorder. So in the end, it's mediocre at lots of things, not really great at anything. Being returned, unfortunately. Low Price Nikon D3000 10MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens with 8GB Card + EN-EL9a Battery + Nikon Gadget Bag + Nikon School DVDs + Accessory Kit

I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera. I'm not disappointed in it. The photo quality is excellent. The automatic features are very handy and the manual override capability is very good. I have been a little discouraged by two things; one, the 'info' button is very close to the shutter-release button and several times I've pressed the wrong one and missed a shot, two, although the lens that came with the camera is very nice I will definitely need a more powerful zoom lens.
So, overall, I would recommend this camera. I will purchase the 200mm zoom lens and eventually get used to avoiding the 'info' button when I want to press the shutter-release. Cheap Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

I bought my D90 from a local camera store on recommendation from a friend who has a D40x. When I pointed out the significant price difference between the two, he simply said. "Buy it; it's worth the difference." And after owning the camera for a year now, I couldn't agree more with his recommendation.

When we buy products and live with them awhile, our impressions may range from "sorely disappointed" to "as expected" to "pleasantly surprised." The D90 has been a very pleasant surprise -- and my expectations were high to begin with.

I have used the D90 in a variety of situations including dog shows, vacation trips, weddings and receptions, and the usual family activities -- around 2500 shots taken so far. It has been completely reliable. The pictures are excellent quality -- that's a camera statement, not one about my skills.

At this point, I have one lens for the D90 -- Nikon's 18-200 mm DX VR zoom. I plan to review the lens separately, but suffice it to say that it is a great all around (some say walk around) lens for the D90.

There are many, many other favorable reviews here on this camera so I won't repeat much on the details here. Suffice it to say, the numbers don't lie!

The D90 has a LOT of functionality. Adding function to a product increases complexity and can make it harder to use. Good product designers get around this by picking defaults such that the function doesn't require user attention unless s/he so wishes. The D90 is excellent in this regard. You can start shooting nice pictures with it in auto mode or the programmed modes fairly quickly. Moving up to the P, A, S, & M modes opens a whole new world of functions you can learn when you need or want them. Learning the D90, and photography in general, is a journey not a goal.

Buying Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

After hearing from numerous other amateur photographers that the Nikon D90 (with kit lens) is an excellent digital SLR, I had high expectations of this purchase. So far I have not been disappointed. The picture quality is outstanding for the price range and the features are enough to keep me creatively challenged for the foreseeable future. I look forward to learning more and gradually pushing this camera's potential all the way.Get more detail about Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens.

Buy Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

Purchase Nikon D5000 12.3 MP DX Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens and 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD

So you want AF to actually work? Well then you're gonna have to pony up the extra dough for the "AF-S" lenses because it won't work with "AF" models. The extra cost associated with the "AF-S" lenses along with the much more limited offering make this camera a bust. If you insist on sticking with Nikon then pony up the extra several hundred for the D90. Otherwise I would say go with the Canon EOS Rebel T1i. It costs a bit more than the D5000, but you'll more than make the money back on lenses.Get more detail about Nikon D5000 12.3 MP DX Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens and 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD.
