There is nothing I do not like about this camera. It is great for sports, my son plays college baseball and I have taken some great pics! Sony Alpha DSLR-A550L 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens Get it now!

I'm happy with this camera. However, the development of digital cameras is very fast so the camera is likely to be behind cutting edge in a couple of years. I bought this camera because it is not that expensive, so one can always upgrade. Some good and bad things:
- Steady shot makes it possible to take very sharp pictures at 1/15.
- Quite decent performance up to ASA 800. I can go up to ASA 12,800, which results in noise, but also sharp pictures in very low light. If you like me hate using the flash, this is great. I'd rather have grain than flat flash light.
- Very sharp live viewfinder. I cannot do without this facility anymore. Not many higher-end DSLR cameras have this function yet.
- The autofocus does not work that well in low light. I don't know if other cameras are better. However, the Manual Focus Live Viewfinder function is very good when using manual focus in low light and low contrast settings.
- The camera isn't well prepared for HDR (high dynamic range). There is a built in function (works just so so), but I'd rater be able to do bracketed exposures in 1 or 2 EV steps. That is not possible. I can do bracketed exposures in 0.3 or 0.7 EV steps but that isn't really useful for HDR. Clearly Sony is holding back on performance for the next model in 2010.
- The camera fits okay in my standard male sized hands. Bigger might fit better but it is also nice that the camera is not bulky.
- Information panel is informative, except for ASA level when using ASA Auto setting. It would have been very nice to know what ASA level the camera decide to use when in Program mode.

If you buy this camera, skip the 18-55 lens and go for the 18-250 lens instead Sony SAL18250 Alpha DT 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 High Magnification Zoom Lens w/Lens Hood. It just doesn't make sense to buy a USD1,000 camera and fit it with a USD100 lens. The longer zoom is a good allround lens. A bit slow, but with an amazing range, 27-375 35mm equivalent. I actually don't find a 200mm zoom that useful, but when you can go up to 375mm new opportunities open. If you want to spend some more dollars, get the 50mm f/1.4 lens. That lens will function like 75mm, which is not optimal, but that is really the only chance of getting a wide open aperture lens. (Sony also sells a 35mm f/1.4, but that is very expensive and has received poor reviews.) The advantage with the 50mm f/1.4 lens is that it is full-frame so it can be used when you later upgrade to a fullformat camera. Sony Alpha DSLRA850 24.6MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) Order Now

I've owned it for about a month now, including some real-world use on a recent trip to Europe. It performed wonderfully and everything about the design is dedicated to shooting stills without distraction. It's large but comfortable, not as heavy as it looks, and with a huge viewfinder and hard buttons for every critical adjustment, I found myself able to get in the zone very quickly. The camera gets out of the way.

The one exception to this - and the reason I'm rating four stars instead of five - is that Sony left out a software function critical for using manual-focus lenses. The function is called "Release w/o Lens". It's available on the A700, but inexplicably not their current top cameras, and allows one to use A-priority with lenses that have no electronic connections, such as a Lensbaby. Just to be clear - this is a software feature and could be added easily as a convenience. It's available on just about every other DSLR out there including the cheapest Canon Rebel and I have not been able to get a response from Sony as to why they left this basic function out. This is the only unprofessional aspect of the camera and has made shooting with my MF lenses much less enjoyable.Get more detail about Sony Alpha DSLRA850 24.6MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only).

Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) Decide Now

Use it with a Nikon 17-55mm 2.8 lens and the Nikon battery grip. I finally got a real DSLR. I like it missing the entry level programs like landscape, portrait etc. and I am really crazy about finally having a real lens barrel in my hand to turn when adjusting the zoom.

I also like it being a bit heavy, so it balances fabulously in my hands and contributes to reduce camera shake.

Picture quality is very good and I still need to figure out how to shoot real excellent shots.

Love it though.Get more detail about Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only).

Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens (Black) Right now

I have had this camera for over five (5) years and I absolutely love it. I have never had any problems with this camera and it has performed amazingly. I have taken around 50,000 pictures with my Rebel and it is still going strong. I have the same original batteries that I got with my camera. My batteries have always lasted a long time before needing to be recharged; when I shot sports I could use one battery for roughly the whole day. Canon products are very high quality, which is what you can expect with brand name Japanese electronics. The Canon lenses are also fantastic; I have owned the high-quality standard 50/1.4, the portrait 85/1.8, the mid telephoto 70-200/4.0, the amazing 100/2.8 macro, and the wide-angle 17-40 L. These are all fantastic lenses to put on your Rebel, and you can rest assured that there is a whole range of Canon products to suit your needs. The only downside to these products is that they are quite expensive.

As far as the Rebel, the only complaints I have are these:

1. The amount of noise at 1600 ISO makes these pictures generally unusable.
2. The AF system is not robust enough for sports; you can do it but it's hard.
3. The grip, somewhat small, can take getting used to.
4. The camera can't take too many RAW or high quality JPEG pictures in succession (important for sports).

In general this camera is a dream for most peoples uses. Eight MP will give you high-quality prints. Unless you want to blow up your pictures to poster size this camera will be great for you.

Save Sony Alpha A700 12.24MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

I bought this cam from J&R through amazon and it came on time and intact. This camera is just what you would expect from a Sony product the best, feels like a mini tank but the lens kit is it not all that, still does the job though for simple shots. I had been thinking about getting a Nikon or Canon, but i thought that their getting old and since this is my first dslr i would go with the NEW! sony has about a 14 percent share in the dslr market now and you bet their gonna grow fast. Sony is always very innovative, making their mark on any platform they get into. on top of that its just an overall cheaper system to be married to at the moment. Cheapest Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 12.1MP Digital SLR Camera with Lumix G Vario 14-45 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH Mega OIS Lens (Black)

This great camera is perfect for whom prefer to compose with the camera in the eye like God wanted, not at an arms length. The image quality is on par with any under US$1500 DSLR. My D90 is gathering dust because if I'm going out, I allways, instintively, grab the G1. It balances very well with the 14-45mm (28-90 equiv.) lens, which is VERY small for DSLR standards. This camera does it's work occupying 60% of the space and weight than an amateur DSLR. It's easy to learn, and it's intelligent ISO and aperture priority modes make it a very quick "decisive moment" camera. The 20mm (40 equiv.)f1.7 it's a dream lens, more than "tack-sharp" at about four ounces!
The electronic viewfinder isn't clear like an optical one, but it's BIG, full frame size, without the dreaded "tunnel effect". It can, if you want, get a highly zoomed center square that makes manual focusing, when you want it, a much simpler task.
The electronic viewfinder is the future of the industry: It turn practical to build much smaller cameras, "in the viewfinder" histograms (it's live view), center "zoom", no mirror slapping, which permits to use lower speeds without blurring, and less moving parts. It's a photography camera: I didn't pay for a movie-capacity that I didn't need or care.
The micro four thirds Panny Lumix G1 is the "goldilocks" camera: just right.
Even if the G1 is standing daily abuse very well, the build quality, materials, switches and knobs of my Canon G11 and Nikon D90 are better, firm, solid.
