i've had many digital point & shoots in the past and i've got to say that the A495 is simply the best. here you have a camera you can take pictures with with ease in automatic mode and then further your picture taking skills with both the program mode and the settings mode. for anyone with experience in digital cameras, the aforementioned settings are familiar territory- but one should know, never has navigating the settings been easier and faster. not only is this a handy little camera to have around for those 'just in case' moments, but it is a great camera to grow with. i really wish that this was my very first introduction to the digital camera world! put in a little effort and viola! in no time, you're taking pictures worth framing. at 10 mega pixels, these shots can be blown up to poster size, suitable for hanging!!
the camera also comes with a video mode- great for shooting small video clips, an AV cable- to attach to your TV set to watch your pics & videos on the big screen, a USB cable- to upload your pics/vids to your computer for editing, and a disk with a pdf instruction manual, and the solid Canon Zoom browser for editing your pics.
in all, a perfect pocket sized camera not only for the person that doesn't feel like lugging around something bigger & more expensive, but for someone on a tight budget that wants something with quality and the ability to learn with.
(honorable mention has to go to the 'posterize' camera setting. i included some of the pics i took in this mode- i'm absolutely addicted to shooting with this setting in widescreen!!!)
finally, nothing is without flaws: if i absolutely HAD to find fault with this camera this would be it:
1. AA battery life (definitely bring backup batteries- or better yet, rechargables)
2. (another person mentioned in another review) flash recovery takes a few seconds- that could mean the difference between a decent pic and a blurry mess. although it goes without saying that this is a problem in almost ALL compact digital cameras.
3. no view finder (i'm reaching here- this has never been a concern of mine, yet some people absolutely NEED one).

I originally purchased this lens for portraiture, specifically newborns. I was also looking for a macro lens, and a bit frustrated with some of the limitations from my 50mm.

This lens, in my opinion, is underpriced for the quality of images. Amazing DOF, soft bokeh, incredibly sharp focus. Highly recommended. This should be a staple in every photographer's camera bag.

For the most part, I love this lens and have gotten really good close up/people shots with it, but if you are looking for landscape/far away shots, this lens isn't as great as others. This lens includes some really nice features like image stabilizer, which makes the pictures come out more clearly, as well as automatic focusing, which is necessary if you are a beginner. This lens really appeals to the beginner and makes learning so much easier. The detail and shadows are amazing, and you can notice every blemish and hair strand if you zoom in on the screen after you take the picture. The speed is a little slow if you are trying to take consecutive photos really quick, you have to wait about 5 seconds between photos to allow the lens to adjust as well as process the image. I know its not bad and if you are a photographer you are probably patient, but if you are trying to get action shots where you don't have much time to wait, it can be a little annoying. If I'd have to say the best things to take pictures with this lens, its close up shots of people, close up shots of pretty much anything, photos of buildings and scenery that isn't really far away when the lighting is above average, and indoor shots where lighting is average. Under low lighting, this lens isn't as high quality, but it can pull some good ones off. Mainly this lens if for taking pictures of friends and outdoor closeups. If you are looking for a lens that can take better action/far away shots, look for some of the bigger, more expensive lenses by Canon. You will be satisfied though, I used this camera to take photos for the yearbook, and they all came out really professional, and looked much better than photos taken from regular, non SLR cameras. I have to say this before anything else - this is a $100 camera. You get what you pay for.

The good:
It's 10M Pixels
It's $100.
Takes nice pictures (in good light).
AA batteries.
Fits in my hand very well.
The "Auto" mode makes it easy.

The bad:
Cheap construction (to the point of damaging Canon's reputation of quality products in my opinion).
No image stabilization (but.... it is a $100 camera...)
**"Charging the flash"... This is an approx 5-10 second delay every time you want to take a picture. It may not sound like that much time, but it gets real annoying real quick.

Bottom line:
It takes pictures. It takes nice pictures. They get a little grainy and colors get a little off at low light. But in good light, it makes good picts. But the delay between pictures, mostly from the "Charging the flash" message, is just too much of an annoyance for me. Which is a shame, because this is a decent little camera otherwise.
